Having read through Google’s design decisions, it seems that they’re justifying the change by wanting to influence behaviours in engaging with all their apps, not just one or two.

Evidently that’s not what people want; they prefer to stick with just Mail or Maps, hence the need for a distinct app identity. I’m wondering how much research went into making these changes… 🧐
